Few Superstars want to get a piece of their adversary more than Daniel Bryan wants to fight The Miz. Except, perhaps, Bryan’s wife Brie Bella, who was champing at the bit all night to fight Miz’s wife Maryse in the Mixed Tag Team Match between the two premiere power couples on SmackDown LIVE. But Bryan & Brie’s expectations of a foregone victory might have been slightly, just slightly, premature.
Yes, Team “Braniel” suffered an unlikely defeat to The It Couple, thanks to a shocking, last-minute maneuver by Maryse that came after all pretense of a match had broken down and the two couples were engaged in an all-out fight. Blame the strategy by Miz and Maryse for that; they made a big show of tagging in and out to slow Bryan’s momentum in a clever exploitation of Mixed Tag rules — men and women can only fight each other — that effectively gave Miz a time-out whenever he needed.
When Brie finally got into the match, she slammed Maryse’s face off the announce desk and mauled her so viciously that Miz ran interference and broke up a pinfall attempt, which only infuriated Bryan all the more and led to a sequence of stereo “Yes!” Kicks so blistering that Miz & Maryse decided they’d had enough. Brie would have no part of that, though, and she hauled Maryse back into the ring, used her to knock Miz off the apron and rolled her up for what seemed to be a deciding pinfall … at least until Maryse reversed it and stunned Brie to earn the three-count herself. A long strategy paying off? A stroke of luck? It’s all the same. The Miz is 2-0 against Daniel Bryan in 2018, and if you’re him, everything is awesome.
Brie Bella and Maryse took center stage just days before they teamed up with their husbands Daniel Bryan and The Miz in Mixed Tag Team action at the WWE Hell in a Cell pay-per-view event this Sunday.
Set to compete in her first singles match in seven years, Maryse seemed hesitant to engage with Brie, constantly stalling and bailing from the squared circle. Finally, Brie grabbed the microphone, called Miz’s Mrs. a coward and goaded her to get into the ring.
However, The A-Lister (who was at ringside, along with Bryan) took great exception to Brie calling his wife a coward. An irate Miz ranted that The “Yes!” Couple would have to wait until the WWE Hell in a Cell pay-per-view event to see them again. Miz & Maryse began to take off, but Brie ran down Maryse and brought her back to the ring.
After each Superstar landed a few haymakers, Brie trapped Maryse in the “Yes!” Lock, but Miz grabbed Brie’s leg and yanked her out of the ring to give Bella the disqualification win. The “Yes!” Man immediately pounced on his rival and started raining fists on The A-Lister. With The Beard continuing to hammer away, Miz tossed Bryan out of the ring right onto an unsuspecting Brie outside.
The chaos would continue with Maryse and Brie brawling once again, and Brie soon claimed the upper hand. Left alone with a furious Bryan and Brie, Miz caught another right hand from Brie Mode before Bryan clotheslined him out of the ring… and this was just a small taste of what’s to come on Sunday.
Nikki wins, no riot(t). Following a petty act of locker-room vandalism, Nikki Bella knocked off Ruby Riott in a singles victory that built nicely upon The Bella Twins’ collective win over Ruby’s two henchwomen, Liv Morgan & Sarah Logan.
That Nikki used her powerhouse style to get past Ruby’s wild brawling would be impressive enough. But given that The Riott Squad was lurking at ringside, the former Divas Champion kept having to turn her attention to turn away would-be interlopers. She dispatched of Sarah Logan quite quickly, but Liv Morgan took a little help to get rid of: After Nikki thwarted the Riott Kick and got Ruby in position for the Rack Attack 2.0, Liv rushed the ring and it took an assist from Brie Bella to clear the way for Nikki’s formidable signature move.
So Nikki gets the win and Brie turns away one devious blonde en route to a confrontation with another. Yep. The Bellas are back.
Only one night into The Bella Twins’ comeback run, and it’s already time for a Bellabration. Nikki & Brie knocked off The Riott Squad in the twins’ first match on Raw in almost three years, and the two former Divas Champions were in rare form from the second the bell rang. With Nikki leading a coordinated attack on Sarah Logan’s shoulders and Brie raining “Yes!” kicks on Logan’s sternum, it took a ringside interference from Ruby Riott to give the Squad its first leg up of the match.
Brie found herself isolated by Morgan & Logan, but a last-second tag brought a red-hot Nikki back into the fray. Ruby attempted to interfere again, but Brie took her and Logan out with a suicide dive, and Nikki sealed the deal with a Rack Attack 2.0 to Liv Morgan. Welcome back, ladies.
Rousey later took part in a backstage segment with Nikki & Brie Bella, with the story being that Natalya wasn’t feeling well following her match and left the room after The Bellas came in. The Bellas offered to be Rousey’s training partners, but Rousey said Natalya has been fantastic in that role. Nikki then said they’d help Rousey if she needs advice with things like running companies, writing a book, and fashion. Rousey told her that she’d definitely take them up on it.
After last week’s shocking news that Brie Bella would return to action to team up with her husband Daniel Bryan to take on The Miz & Maryse in a Mixed Tag Team Match at the WWE Hell in a Cell pay-per-view event, the happy couple hit the scene on Team Blue to talk about that major showdown.
Bryan & Bella were gleeful when reminiscing on Brie’s forceful punch to Miz’s face last week. However, before the two could look too far ahead to their clash with The “It” Couple in several weeks, they were interrupted by Andrade “Cien” Almas & Zelina Vega, with Almas boldly challenging Bryan to a match. Bryan was quick to accept, and SmackDown LIVE General Manager Paige arrived to declare that match would be next!
Daniel Bryan and Andrade “Cien” Almas collided for the first time ever, as Brie Bella and Zelina Vega watched from ringside.
The two technicians threw down in the early goings, setting a rapid pace right from the get-go. However, right as the match was entering its next gear, The Miz & Maryse arrived, and The Miz attempted to distract The “Yes!” Man and cost him the victory. The Miz paid for his underhanded tactics when Bryan took him out with an unbelievable suicide dive before catching Andrade in the “Yes!” Lock. However, Vega got up on the apron and tried to run interference. Brie Bella made Andrade’s business associate pay for her trouble when she yanked her off the apron and dropped her with a mean forearm. Yet, Brie would then feel a rude awakening when Maryse pounced from behind and threw her into the ring post.
From there, The Miz attacked Bryan in the middle of the contest and a brutal beatdown ensued with Almas & Vega getting a few more licks in on Bryan & Bella before Maryse dropped Brie with the French Kiss, and The Miz leveled Bryan with the Skull-Crushing Finale.
The It Couple then basked in their handiwork, sealing it with a kiss as they began to look forward to the WWE Hell in a Cell pay-per-view event.
Screencaps will be added on Wednesday!
