Since day one, Becky Lynch has dreamed of becoming a champion and having her sacrifices validated for both her and her fans. Well, The Irish Lass Kicker finally checked that one off the list at Backlash, winning the Six-Pack Elimination Challenge to become the first SmackDown Women’s Champion in epic fashion.
Oh, and that sound you hear? Yeah, that’s the rest of the Superstars in the Women’s division salivating to now make her their new prime target. Which competitor (if not all of them) will step to Lynch in an attempt to get the first solo title opportunity?
Another thing that did not go unnoticed Sunday was just how intense the ongoing conflict is between Carmella and Nikki Bella. At the height of their collision during the free-for-all, The Princess of Staten Island ultimately eliminated Nikki, although it wasn’t without a tremendous amount of blowback from the Fearless Superstar. Will the beef between the two interfere with Becky’s inauguration?
Last week, Carmella once again took out Nikki Bella, the competitor perceived by many to be the favorite heading into the Six-Pack Challenge at Backlash to crown the first SmackDown Women’s Champion this Sunday.
However, that conflict is quite frankly just the tip of the iceberg, as the entire Women’s division – from seasoned battlers to hungry up-and-comers – are all clamoring to prove that they have what it takes to rule over Team Blue. Who will make their mark on the final show before the first SmackDown LIVE pay-per-view?
After the SmackDown Women’s Title was unveiled on SmackDown Live and a Six-Pack Challenge for that title was announced to crown the inaugural champion at Backlash, up-and-coming Superstar Carmella made am aggressive statement. She attacked Nikki Bella before her SmackDown Live debut match — and then again on Talking Smack.
Will Nikki be out for payback on The Princess of Stanton Island? Yeah, probably. What other competitor will look to make their voice heard as things heats up on the road to SmackDown Live’ first solo pay-per-view.
The first SmackDown Women’s Champion will be crowned at WWE Backlash Sunday, Sept. 11, when Becky Lynch, Nikki Bella, Natalya, Naomi, Alexa Bliss and Carmella compete in a Six-Pack Challenge. The first Superstar to claim a fall will be declared the victor and new titleholder.
SmackDown Live General Manager Daniel Bryan and Commissioner Shane McMahon unveiled the newly commissioned championship on Aug. 23, only two days after Team Blue received a “Fearless” surprise.
The longest-reigning Divas Champion in history, Nikki Bella returned unannounced at SummerSlam in her first match back since undergoing neck surgery in January. Taking the spot of Eva Marie in a Six-Woman Tag Team Match, Nikki showed she hasn’t lost a step, winning the bout for her team after torching Carmella with a new finishing maneuver.
In a post-match interview, Nikki left no doubt that she has come back with the intention of dominating SmackDown Live, but to become the brand’s top female Superstar, she must contend with a dangerous playing field that barely resembles the one she left in October 2015.
Former Divas Champion Natalya has grown more vicious inside the ring since then, while “Irish Lass Kicker” Becky Lynch — the only member of the “Four Horsewomen” to have never won a title in either NXT or WWE — looks to prove that Bryan and McMahon’s faith wasn’t misplaced when they made her Team Blue’s first female WWE Draft pick.
SmackDown Live’s increasingly stacked Women’s division doesn’t end there. With a new, jaw-dropping entrance to match her vivacious style of combat, Naomi is eager to leave the competition in the “Rear View,” and WWE newcomers Carmella and Alexa Bliss seek to continue the trend of NXT women quickly ascending the ranks in WWE.
Which Superstar will earn the distinction of becoming the first SmackDown Women’s Champion? Watch the blue brand-exclusive WWE Backlash Sunday, Sept. 11, at 8 ET/5 PT on WWE Network to find out.
Perhaps one of the biggest surprises of SummerSlam was when Nikki Bella returned from her longstanding neck injury to win the 6-Women Tag Team Match and join the SmackDown Live roster!
Later in a WWE.com Exclusive video, the former champion made it clear that she has big plans for Team Blue. Her victory at The Biggest Event of the Summer has already provided a reminder of just how dangerous she can and will be to have on Tuesday nights. But with her brother-in-law Daniel Bryan already teasing the creation of new SmackDown championships and her fellow competitors calling for the creation of a SmackDown Women’s Title, you can bet the Tuesday night’s newest Superstar will only add fuel to that fire.
Don’t miss when Nikki Bella makes her SmackDown Live debut tonight at 8/7 C on USA Network.
